Welcome to SLOPFEST 99!

Since 1927, Vienna has celebrated art made by machines. This year the machines are faster, shinier and more silver than ever. Welcome to the 73rd Slopfest: "A Glitch in the Matrix".

A film suggested reality is a simulation. The committee confirmed it: the same man walked past twice.

Guests were offered a red or a blue Pez at the door, which the committee insisted were metaphors. A committee member in a long coat walked past the entrance every four minutes to create a sense of déjà vu. He was seen 91 times and has since been promoted to chief experience officer.

* Pedants: we know the millennium ends on 31.12.2000. We will hold another last Slopfest of the millennium next year.

! WILL THE SLOP SURVIVE THE YEAR 2000?

Q: What happens to the art at midnight?
A: Our generative fax art machine stores the year in two digits. On 01.01.00 it will believe it is 1900 and start producing Jugendstil. The Secession has been informed.
Q: Is Slopfest itself Y2K compliant?
A: Slopfest has used four-digit years since 1927, because the founder had very big handwriting. Edition numbers, however, have only two digits. After #99 comes #00. We will worry about that in 2026.
Q: Should I prepare?
A: Yes. We recommend 40 litres of water, candles, a torch and at least three floppy disks of backup slop per household.
Q: Did you test it?
A: We set the Slopbot clock to 31.12.1999 23:59:59. It printed "HAPPY NEW YEAR 1900" and then a picture of a horse. We consider this a success.
